A Tribute To Albert Lee Jimmy
December 11, 2006 was marked with the passing of Albert [Alby] Lee Jimmy. Alby was a person who left a wake wherever he chose to point his life’s canoe. He left an impression, irrepressibly positive, with everyone he met and could be counted on to bring smiles and laughter to even the most depressed crowd, just by walking among them.
Alby was the Joker in a deck of cards, hard dealt, never one to blame anyone for the game of life he had chosen to play. While he had many historical issues which marked the way he was, he bristled with a flash of anger, and then ran at the first sign of anyone trying to coddle him.
His last days were marked with an acknowledgment of the risks that stood before him, and choosing to take that one last stand, taking the chance that he might once again be able to walk the land. But that was not to be, and he died as he had lived, the quiet man.
I share with you a eulogy I wrote for a friend some years back, I often find it fits for many:
THE RANGE OF AFFECT
[A Tribute to Ginger Baker]
The range of affect has been great;
Just as a stone thrown skips across the
surface of a still pond;
As it slips below the surface,
it leaves only you to know it was ever there;
And yet, as the stone settles to the water’s floor;
It changes the surface forever;
Such is the Range of Affect.
While Alby’s stone has slipped from view, the wave to be felt for times to come, and the wake of his passing canoe leaving pause for thought.

God, Part II – Lyrics [U2]: Sung by ‘Veronica’ at the Memorial 2006-12-21
Don’t believe the devil
I don’t believe his book
But the truth is not the same
Without the lies he made up
Don’t believe in excess
Success is to give
Don’t believe in riches
But you should see where I live
I…I believe in love
Don’t believe in forced entry
Don’t believe in rape
But every time she passes by
Wild thoughts escape
I don’t believe in death row
Skid row or the gangs
Don’t believe in the Uzi
It just went off in my hand
I…I believe in love
Don’t believe in cocaine
Got a speed-ball in my head
I could cut and crack you open
Do you hear what I said
Don’t believe them when they tell me
There ain’t no cure
The rich stay healthy
The sick stay poor
I…I believe in love
Don’t believe in Goldman
His type like a curse
Instant karma’s going to get him
If I don’t get him first
Don’t believe in rock ‘n’ roll
Can really change the world
As it spins in revolution
It spirals and turns
I…I believe in love
Don’t believe in the 60’s
The golden age of pop
You glorify the past
When the future dries up
Heard a singer on the radio late last night
He says he’s gonna kick the darkness
‘til it bleeds daylight
I…I believe in love
I feel like I’m falling
Like I’m spinning on a wheel
It always stops beside of me
With a presence I can feel
I…I believe in love

When God Made Me – Neil Young
was he thinkin’ about my country
or the color of my skin?
was he thinkin’ ‘bout my religion
and the way i worshipped him?
did he create just me in his image
or every living thing?
when god made me
when god made me
was he planning only for believers
or for those who just have faith?
did he envision all the wars
that were fought in his name?
did he say there was only one way
to be close to him?
when god made me
when god made me
did he give me the gift of love
to say who i could choose?
when god made me
when god made me
when god made me
when god made me
did he give me the gift of voice
so some could silence me?
did he give me the gift of vision
not knowing what i might see?
did he give me the gift of compassion
to help my fellow man?
when god made me
when god made me
when god made me
when god made me

The Needle And The Damage Done – Neil Young
I caught you knockin’
at my cellar door
I love you, baby
can I have some more
ooh, ooh, the damage done
I hit the city and
I lost my band
I watched the needle
take another man
ohh, ohh, the damage done
I sing the song
because i love the man
I know that some
of you don’t understand
milk-blood
to keep from running out
I’ve seen the needle
and the damage done
a little part of it in everyone
but every junkie’s
like a setting sun
I caught you knockin’
at my cellar door
I love you, baby
can i have some more
ooh, ooh, the damage done
I’ve seen the needle
and the damage done
a little part of it in everyone
but every junkie’s
like a setting sun
ABSTRACT – This is about heroin use and what it will do to you in the end. Young wrote it about Danny Whitten, one of the original members of his band Crazy Horse. In 1971, Young went on tour and hired Crazy Horse and Nils Lofgren as backup. During rehearsals, Whitten was so high on heroin that he couldn’t even hold up his guitar. Young fired him, gave Whitten 50 bucks [for rehab] and a plane ticket back to Los Angeles. Upon reaching LA, Whitten spent the 50 bucks on pure heroin, which killed him.
